Description:
A compact duck with a small blue-grey bill with black tip and pointed tall. Male has yellow forehead and forecrown, chestnut head and pinkish breast; shows white forewing in flight. Female has rather uniform head, breast and flanks. In all plumages, shows white belly and rather pointed tail in flight.
Distribution:
Common passage migrant through major waterways and lakes all across Gilgit-Baltistan. Landing in the region during cloudy/harsh weather, at lakes, marshes, rivers and streams with fringe vegetation up to 3500m, avoiding turbulent waters.
Behavior:
Feeds by grazing on dry land in tight packs, dabbling on water surface and head dipping in shallow water; appears to favor nitrogen-fertilized grasslands in early breeding season. In winter feeds both at day or night. Essentially vegetarian; leaves, stems, roots, rhizomes and seeds of grasses, sedges and aquatic vegetation. in winter; occasionally takes small invertebrates.
